Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport

Louisville’s Muhammed Ali International Airport is a medium-sized airport serving a major metropolitan area that’s surpassed the million mark. The airport is primarily used by UPS, hosting it’s Worldport Air Hub, but also has a growing demand for passenger flights. Kentuckians have three major airports to choose from. There’s Louisville, Lexington, and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky. Although Louisville’s main airport is named after famed boxer Muhammad Ali, the airport’s old name initials (SDF) continue to be widely used for air reservation and reference purposes. “SDF” stands for Standiford Field. And for many it’s their airport of choice.

Great Ride!!

The airport is serviced by many national airlines like Southwest, Delta, and American. You can also use discount airlines like Allegiant and Spirit. There’s even a new kid in town with Breeze Airways. In fact, many folks used to take advantage of the incredibly cheap, direct flights to Fort Lauderdale on Spirit Airlines. This all changed when Frontier Airlines acquired Spirit and the cheap flights disappeared. Not only that, but the existing Spirit flights are now cursed with horrendously long layovers which make the old 2hr flights an eight hour nightmare. All good things come to an end, unfortunately. There’s still some great flights to many cities throughout the country, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find many direct flights. And while the airport calls itself an international airport, I’m not sure how much international travel there are. Adding international certainly raises the airport’s profile, but who knows how accurate it is.

I recently had to travel on business to Chicago and arrived back in Louisville, late on a Monday night. To say I was exhausted would’ve been the understatement of the century. When I saw the airport cart, I asked for a ride, and the driver kindly obliged. She also didn’t have any issue with me taking this cool little video as she got me from the gate and took me all the way to the front of the airport.

I love that she asked me how I got so tall. “I ate my vegetables,” I told her.
