I had a wonderful time in beautiful Carrollton, KY, just recently and I wanted to share my experience with y’all. My walk took place on an early Saturday morning before the dreaded August afternoon heat kicked in. I was delighted to see quite a bit of movement in the community. I did an initial driving tour to see what points of interests I wanted to include. I also wanted to pick where I’d start my video from. In terms of walks, Carrollton is a much larger city than most of the smaller towns and villages I cover throughout the Commonwealth. Spontaneity is great, but doing a little homework first, certainly doesn’t hurt.
One of the first things I noticed was that the Carroll County courthouse was under renovation. Although it’s not great for the video, it’s great for the community. I love when local government takes the initiative to keep their buildings and facilities at their best. It’s a tough call, especially for smaller counties, but that’s what separates effective government from failed administrations.
For many counties, the courthouse is their central showpiece – it drums up tourism and serves as a focal point for businesses. The same is the case for Carrollton. There’s a number of businesses all within 2-3 blocks of the courthouse. There’s also a number of shops that directly surround it. So you can imagine that seeing this key building covered in scaffolding, with yellow tubes, and construction vehicles all over the grounds might look a little unsettling. It might not be the best look for tourism or for business, but the work is necessary. There’s other counties where they’ll band-aid the issues for as long as possible to avoid this look. That’s actually as irresponsible as you can get! I’d like to commend Carrollton and and Carroll County for not putting off the important work. This is how tax dollars should be spent. Job well done!
This walk wasn’t just filming historic buildings, seeing government in action, beautiful flowers, or learning about history and geography. Those are all great things by the way. And each of those things, alone, would have made the video worth it. But there was so much more. I have to say that a big plus of this walk were the people. I met so many nice people – happy people – along the way. Anytime I do these videos, it’s the positive interactions that really warm my heart.
